With an interest in animal health, conservation and genetics, we are passionate about preserving the unique characteristics of these special animals, and take great care in only breeding and selling the best animals in terms of physical form, and temperament. We are now located in Korumburra and while we don’t need the cattle for weed management any more they continue to prove themselves as an ideal breed for the southern Australian conditions with their ease of calving, natural hardiness and ability to adapt to challenging climes - hot or cold!. then 15 as we expanded over the road to a neighbours farm and before long were fully fledged breeders and members of the AHCS. We were deeply in love and our three friendly lawnmowers soon became 5. Enter the Highland! Sure footed, short legged and happy to forage-graze on a range of plants, the Highlands were ideally suited to our Scottish-like hills, and soon had the place cleaned up. The property had been mostly neglected for the best part of 15 years, and we were looking for a low impact way to manage the weeds and the steep terrain. We first were introduced to the breed in 2015 when we bought our first farm in South Gippsland. Thankfully (and with great credit to the works of The Australian Highland Cattle Society, and it’s members), the breed has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years, with demand coming from tree-changers who love the beautiful, docile animals for maintaining small acreage, and an interest from the food and restaurant industry for the breed’s unique, lean meat. Until recently, the affectionately known “Scottish runt” was one of these cattle breeds - overlooked for bigger framed, hornless animals which produced a larger carcass and were easier to rear and process.
It may come as a surprise to many (it’s something that we didn’t realise until I met some dedicated and passionate breeders of heritage cattle and rare poultry), that as well as wildlife, many beautiful and unique breeds of livestock are at serious risk of becoming extinct.
